We all want to live in the best location, in fact, when we are buying a property we are always told to think location, location, location but finding it can prove somewhat tricky.

Thankfully, it seems that there are teams of experts out there who are studying the quality of living in the major cities all over the world. Their goal is to provide us with the information so that we can decide the best place to live!

One of these groups is Mercer, who have been conducting studies for the past 19 years. They provide an annual, in-depth report and the very interesting Quality of Living survey.

The survey and the report take lots of different factors into account including infrastructure, transportation and quality of drinking water.

For the eighth year in a row, the capital of Austria, Vienna, came out on top, closely followed by Zurich and Auckland.

The top 10 cities to live in 2017 were:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Zurich, Switzerland
  3. Auckland, New Zealand
  4. Munich, Germany
  5. Vancouver, Canada
  6. Dusseldorf, Germany
  7. Frankfurt, Germany
  8. Geneva, Switzerland
  9. Copenhagen, Denmark
    = 10. Basel, Switzerland
    = 10. Sydney, Australia

Perhaps there is little surprise that top 10 is dominated by cities located in central Europe, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Surprisingly, the highest ranked US city was San Francisco that came in a lowly 29th. In addition, London was the highest ranked UK city and came in a disappointing 40th.

2017, was the first time that Mercer had compiled a separate list purely for infrastructure. The results for this were slightly different:

  4. Dusseldorf, Germany
  5. Hong Kong, Hong Kong
  6. London, UK
  7. Sydney, Australia
    = 9. Hamburg, Germany
    = 9. Vancouver, Germany
    = 9. Zurich, Switzerland

Only six cities managed to make both lists, they were They were Munich, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Vancouver and Sydney.

In a press release Ilya Bonic, senior partner and president of Mercer’s Career business said:

“Economic instability, social unrest, and growing political upheaval all add to the complex challenge multinational companies face when analysing quality of living for their expatriate workforce.

“For multinationals and governments it is vital to have quality of living information that is accurate, detailed, and reliable.

“It not only enables these employers to compensate employees appropriately, but it also provides a planning benchmark and insights into the often-sensitive operational environment that surrounds their workforce. 

“In uncertain times, organisations that plan to establish themselves and send staff to a new location should ensure they get a complete picture of the city, including its viability as a business location and its attractiveness to key talent.”
